Remember dreaming of gene mutation X-Men-like superpowers as a kid? Or maybe you were more of a Static Shock fan creating powers from chemical accident? Turns out, the real-life superpower is closer to Iron Man's suit – and it's called AI. I'm not talking about sentient robots or self-driving cars (though those are part of the picture). AI is quietly, but powerfully, revolutionising cybersecurity, presenting both incredible opportunities and significant challenges. Why should you care right now? Because this transformation is impacting your role, your organisation, and your future in this field, maybe.

From Comic Books to Code: The AI Revolution is Here

We might not have those flying metal suits (yet!), but we do have incredibly potent AI tools – think of them as a real-world J.A.R.V.I.S. Okay, it might not be quite as flashy as the movies, but we're getting closer with every iteration. And let's be honest, pop culture often foreshadows technological breakthroughs. Remember how Star Trek inspired iPads and automatic doors? It's happening again with AI, but the stakes are far higher. We're talking about the security of our data, our critical infrastructure, and our very way of life.

But, just like Tony Stark needed to be cautious with Ultron (and for the comic book OGs, yes, I know Hank Pym actually created Ultron 😉), we in cybersecurity need to be mindful of how we wield this power. AI is a double-edged sword. It can fortify our defences, but it can also be weaponised by malicious actors. This makes the ethical considerations surrounding AI in cybersecurity critical.

AI: Your Cybersecurity Superpower – But With Great Responsibility

AI isn't about replacing human cybersecurity experts; it's about enhancing our capabilities. It's about augmenting our existing skills, freeing us to focus on the strategic, creative, and uniquely human aspects of this field. Think of AI as the ultimate tool in your arsenal – exponentially more powerful than anything we've had before. Just as a photographer uses Photoshop, or a musician uses Logic Pro, a cybersecurity professional can leverage AI to amplify their expertise and achieve far more.

AI's superpowers include:

  • Lightning-Fast Data Analysis: Sifting through mountains of data to identify subtle anomalies and predict potential threats.
  • Proactive Threat Hunting: Brainstorming thousands of attack vectors in minutes, uncovering patterns humans might miss.
  • Automated Response: Reacting to incidents with speed and precision, minimising damage. This has always been a pipe dream for me and we are now so close to have it materialised in our day-to-day life.

This allows us to shift from a reactive security posture to a proactive one – anticipating and preventing attacks before they happen.

The Shifting Bottleneck: From Execution to Ideation

It used to be that even the most brilliant cybersecurity concept could be stalled by limitations in execution. Building security software, implementing complex protocols, or training staff, all required, time, and funding.

But today, that's changing. The rise of AI is dramatically accelerating the execution process. Tasks that once took weeks can now be accomplished in hours.

This means the bottleneck is increasingly shifting away from execution and towards ideation.

The Quality Trap: Why Average Inputs Lead to Average Outputs

Here's the catch: While AI excels at execution, it's only as good as the input it receives. Garbage in, garbage out. If your initial idea is mediocre, or your prompts are poorly crafted, the AI-powered output will likely be, well, average.

We're seeing a trend: people relying too heavily on AI to generate content or solutions without providing high-quality input. This creates a cycle of mediocrity. It doesn't add genuine value.

That is to say: Boosting the quality and density of our initial ideas becomes crucial. AI, at least for now, struggles to generate truly groundbreaking ideas independently. This makes our role in the ideation process even more vital.

The Enduring Power of the "Executor Mindset"

However, one element remains constant: the ability to navigate setbacks and iterate. This is where the "executor mindset" shines.

Let's say you task ChatGPT with creating a cybersecurity policy, and the result is underwhelming. Do you give up? Or do you refine, experiment and persist? Those with experience in execution are naturally inclined towards persistence. They possess the resilience to:

  • Embrace uncertainty.
  • Learn from failures.
  • Continuously adapt and improve.

This ability to deal with ambiguity, to unlearn and relearn, will be an essential skill in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

  • ElevenLabs: Generate realistic AI voiceovers. Same as the other one, in case you need to social engineer someone.

  • Geospy: Determine the location of a photograph. For OSINT purposes, or just curiosity.
  • Fal: Run open-source AI models without needing local hardware or deep technical knowledge.

While some worry about AI displacing jobs, the reality is that it will be a long time before AI can replace a human who effectively uses AI. The human element – our intuition, critical thinking, and contextual understanding – remains essential. It's about levelling the playing field and adding that uniquely human touch.

The Human Element: The Real Superpower

AI is a powerful tool, but the human element unlocks its true potential. We must combine our expertise, intuition, and ethical considerations with AI's capabilities to build a truly secure digital world. This requires:

  • Investing in Training: Ensuring cybersecurity professionals have the skills to work effectively with AI.
  • Fostering Collaboration: Sharing knowledge and adapting collectively to the evolving threat landscape.
  • Ethical Dialogue: Engaging in open conversations about the responsible use of AI in cybersecurity.

For me, whilst the scales are tipping in favour of the ability to formulate a good idea, to drive improvement, one cannot discount the ability to effectively execute. Whilst AI is becoming more proficient at carrying out the nuts and bolts of a plan, an executor mindset is still necessary to deal with the inevitable set-backs.
