How to Make the Most of Your 1-1 Meetings
As a leader, I find great satisfaction in having regular one-on-one meetings with my team members. Maybe because of my introverted nature I feel more comfortable in smaller, more focused settings. These 1-1s have proven to be an invaluable tool for developing stronger connections and understanding within my team. I consider 1-1s to be the foundation of a successful and healthy work relationship, and I am not alone. Gallup's latest report revealed that 87% of millennials value growth and development opportunities in a job.
1-1s offer a unique opportunity to connect with your team members on a human level.
It's not about becoming best friends or sharing every detail of your life, but fostering a sense of trust and understanding. Sharing a bit about yourself can create a safe space for open communication, especially during challenging times. It also allows for private discussions on sensitive topics like feedback and development plans, which might not be appropriate in a group setting.
It's YOUR Meeting, Own It! đŁď¸
Remember, a 1-1 is a two-way street. It's your responsibility to come prepared with an agenda and topics you'd like to discuss. Think of it as a chance to seek advice, share feedback, ask questions, or gain valuable insights. Don't let it devolve into a monotonous status update â that's what Slack and email are for!
When starting with 1-1s, it's easy to fall into the trap of turning them into project status updates. While occasional project updates can be helpful, don't let them dominate the conversation. Use your precious 1-1 time to go into more meaningful discussions that will truly benefit you and your manager in the long run.
Kickstart Your One-on-Ones with These Questions â
If you're new to 1-1s or looking to uplift your existing meetings, here are some go-to questions to get the conversation going:
- Where do you prefer to receive feedback? (Slack, email, in person)
- How do you like to be recognised? (Publicly or privately)
- What are your expectations for our 1-1s?
- What's your favourite way to reward yourself?
These questions help you understand your team members' preferences and motivations, allowing you to tailor your approach and provide meaningful support. Plus, knowing their favourite rewards can be a fun way to show appreciation for a job well done!
